Christian Houge - Death Of A Mountain
14th – 18th May 2024
Bermondsey Project Space, London
We are delighted that Bermondsey Project Space will be hosting a solo exhibition of the photography series Death Of A Mountain (2016 - 2023) by Norwegian photographer Christian Houge. The work was produced in its current manifestation at Street Level Photoworks and was a main feature in the group show of Nordic artists Forever Changes, which coincided with COP26. Christian’s powerful work explores environmental issues and examines our relation to Nature and the environmental challenges we are facing, provoking new questions around the Anthropocene.
The series is a homage to an ancient giant of the Rhone glacier in Switzerland. Scientists warn that the world’s glaciers will be gone within this century if we don’t reduce global warming dramatically. The covering of parts of the glacier with UV-resistant fabric to halt glacial melting represents Man’s feeble attempt to stop the inevitable in the near future, which for Houge represents something that is being lost forever – ‘As if tens of thousands of years culminated into an organism’s last breath of life.’
The exhibition is being organised by Bermondsey Project Space and coincides with Photo London 2024.
