NOTES was edited and guided by Scottish Photographers member Sandy Sharp and was published from 2003 to 2012, producing twenty-seven issues featuring the work of both its members and many others. Scottish Photographers was initiated by Sandy and Stewart Shaw in 2001 as a network of photographers who would come together to discuss and enjoy their work - at the time of the last issue of NOTES it had over 200 members. Sandy Sharp was an active member of Glasgow Photography Group (GPG) which led to the establishment of Street Level in 1989 where he was a member of the Board of management for several years. Amongst many other ports of call as a photographer, Sandy's work was included in the fourth GPG exhibition at the Corridor Gallery in Fife, and his solo show 'Another World' was exhibited at Street Level in 2004, with an accompanying essay by Ray McKenzie.
An initiative to reignite NOTES was undertaken when a one-off magazine was published called Solas in 2013. In 2016 NOTES was relaunched as NOTES - Letters to Photography, with a new editorial board and published as a biannual journal as a way to contribute to artist-led discourses around photographic practice in Scotland.
