Inheritance
7th September - 1st October Trongate 103, Glasgow
7th - 13th October - Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow
Inheritance brings together the work of 7 young people in Glasgow and 6 in Bangalore in a project exploring shared histories, memories and identities between South Asia and the UK. All the participants spent several months engaging in a photography training programme developing their skills around image-making and storytelling through photography and in the production of an exhibition with artist collaborators Arpita Shah, Morwenna Kearsley (in Glasgow), Vivek Muthuramalingam, Krishanu Chatterjee and Snigdha Rana (in Bangalore, India).
The project is part of the larger initiative Our Shared Cultural Heritage , with this strand being a collaboration between Glasgow Museums and Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow, and Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) and Kanike Collective in Bangalore. This has involved a series of activities in skills development in both locations, plus online tuition, guest artists talks and digital engagement.
The work includes a diversity of approaches from portraiture, staged photography, documentary, and social landscape, exploring themes of family and cultural history, migration, place, class, gender identity, conventions of social life and notions of community.
The participants in Glasgow are Chrislyn Naysha Pereira, Amina Bashir, Zainab Ashraf, Zianib Nisa Ahmad, Roshni Advani, Malini Chakrabarty, Zain Saleem
In Bangalore Nidhi Bhandari, Aryan Gulati, Ganesh B V, Sacheth N, Tanvi Mallapur, Pragyna Divakar
A reciprocal exhibition takes place in Bangalore from the 22nd September.
