'A Life Worth Living'
Nick Hedges’ photographs for Shelter 1969-72
In 1968, Shelter employed Nick Hedges to document the oppressive and abject living conditions being experienced in poor quality housing in the UK. The whole project included images taken in Newcastle, London, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, Burnley, Sheffield, and Glamorgan. Shelter commissioned the work in an effort to raise consciousness about the extent of unfit living conditions and to illustrate, in human terms, what the real cost of bad housing was.
This selection of large scale panels were chosen by Nick Hedges from his time in Scotland. They represent just a few from a much larger body of work. They have recently been seen in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh and at Maryhill Burgh Halls.
