Shifting Perspectives: Sylvia Grace Borda in discussion with Christiane Monarchi

The recent book ‘Shifting Perspectives’ (2020) is a thought-provoking art book exploring changing landscapes through the pioneering work of Canadian-British photographer Sylvia Grace Borda. Sylvia has undertaken epic projects to re-imagine urban spaces, from the “New Towns” of East Kilbride and Glenrothes in Scotland to modernist faith buildings in Northern Ireland. The publication is described as a ‘dazzling new monograph’, where her exceptional body of work is examined and placed in both a regional and international context. Her practice originates in British Columbia and covers subjects in relation to art history, the Vancouver School of Art, digital media, community engagement, and projects concluded in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Finland.

Sylvia is a member of a growing field of artists tackling cultural policy through the visual arts. She is a sought-after and respected voice at the forefront of culture-led, socio-economic, and community-development/engagement projects in Canada and the UK. She has worked nationally and internationally in senior roles in the creative and cultural industries for seventeen years. Her exhibition ‘Camera Histories’ was first exhibited at Street Level Photoworks in late 2013.

Christiane Monarchi is the founding editor of Photomonitor , an online magazine dedicated to photography and lens-based media, which has published more than 1,200 features since 2011. She is also a freelance curator, lecturer, and an artist mentor and currently serves on the Board of Photofusion, London, on the steering committee of Fast Forward, Women in Photography, and as a trustee of The Hyman Foundation. In 2020 she co-founded Hapax Magazine, a new publication which commissions photographic artists and curators to make new work specifically for this publication.
