The work represents an active visual archive consisting of images made during Nieuwenhuize’s travels to different cities in Europe and the USA. It develops his artistic practice and concerns with memory into an abstract approach on documentary and street photography which creates a more associative reference to the way memory works.

Johan was born in Oost-Souburg, The Netherlands in 1980 and is a photographer, artist and curator. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague in 2006. He has received grants from Fonds BKVB (now Mondriaan Fund) and Stroom Den Haag. In 2011 he initiated Platform57 of which he is curator and director.

His work has been shown at Van Kranendonk Gallery Den Haag, Art Rotterdam, Unseen Photo Fair 2012, the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing and De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal in Middelburg.

Nieuwenhuize was assigned by Koninklijke Schouwburg Den Haag, Volkskrant Magazine, NRC Handelsblad and Paradox, Edam. His work has been published in NRC M Magazine, nrc.next and YVI Magazine.

Johan is represented in art collections of The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, VUMC, Twynstra Gudde, Fotografisk Center Copenhagen, Reyn van der Lugt and various private collections.
